Officially started in 1974, The Woodlands is one of the best-selling master-planned communities in Texas and in the nation, widely admired for its beautifully preserved environment and quality amenities. Located 28 miles north of Houston along I-45, the community now boasts more than 33,830 single-family homes, with more than 12,225 apartments, condominiums and townhomes, and approximately 118,000 residents and 2,100 businesses. Of the 28,000 acres in The Woodlands, 7,665 acres are devoted to green space in parks, golf courses and greenbelts. Nearly 8,000 acres, making up over 25% of it, will remain undeveloped green space at build-out.
Encompassing nine residential villages, commercial centers, a resort, a luxury hotel and convention center, additional upscale hotels, hospitals and health care facilities, and exceptional shopping, dining, entertainment and recreational amenities, The Woodlands was always envisioned as a ‘complete’ community with a major employment center where residents can ‘live, work, play and learn’.
Among the early landmarks in The Woodlands include the Woodlands Resort and Conference Center which began as a hotel to house future residents to The Woodlands and is now the region’s premier meeting destination, also hosting 36 holes of golf on two courses. Another would be the Woodlands Country Club, a private country club hosting 63 holes of golf on three championship courses including the Tournament Course, host of the PGA Tour Champions Insperity Invitational
With a lifestyle centered on the environment, the arts, technology and healthy living, The Woodlands now offers amenities which include 190 miles of hike and bike trails, 121 parks, and seven golf courses. The Woodlands Town Center features The Woodlands Waterway at the heart of the commercial district — a 1.8-mile-long waterway which links office buildings, shops, restaurants and plaza areas, with water taxis that provide transportation between these areas and more destinations, including the 1.3 million square-foot The Woodlands Mall and Market Street. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, one of the most popular outdoor amphitheaters in the world, hosts national touring shows and cultural performances. An exceptional collection of larger-than-life sculptures and outdoor art installations adorns public spaces, making it home to more outdoor art per capita than anywhere else in the U.S. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival has been named one of the top 5 art festivals in the world and for well over a decade has featured artwork from artist across the country.
The Woodlands area is home to a variety of leading companies, including Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, ExxonMobil, Huntsman Corporation, McKesson Specialty Health and Repsol USA.
In addition, highly rated school districts — Conroe, Magnolia and Tomball ISD, along with acclaimed private and preparatory schools — provide residents access to excellent choices for education. The Woodlands is also home to Lone Star College-Montgomery.
Excellent healthcare options abound with the area being home to Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, Memorial Hermann-The Woodlands Medical Center and CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands.
